Why start this site?
That question has a somewhat long winded answer; the short version is, we enjoy research and we enjoy Harry Potter. The Harry Potter Lexicon, being an incredibly useful and comprehensive encyclopedia of sorts, inspired us to do a similar website for the marauders - James, Peter, Sirius and Remus, plus Lily. However, while Steve focused on encyclopedic entries for his site, we wanted to footnote the source material as well, and pull out information specific only to the Marauders.
The long answer goes something like this.
There are few people in life more focused or who have more of a one-track-mind than a pop culture fan, or a research student. I have the obsessive pleasure of being both. For three and a half years my major was ancient religious and social history - reading ancient source material in order to extract the most information one can. Because ancient history, unlike modern, has a finite amount of primary sources to cull from, it makes you really appreciate what you can get out of a single three or four page document.
Reading the Harry Potter books and thinking of them as historical sources was just habit, coming from this kind of research. I try and extrapolate as much as I can about the world - the social history of the wizarding culture, the people within that history, and more - and analyze the texts in that way, to better understand the world that JK Rowling has created.
To that end, I wanted to take the marauders' history, any references that might help us better understand them, and their era, and make them accessible to other people who might want to know the same things. The essays on this site are all footnoted for a reason - working as that kind of research student, you never properly say anything new. You simply analyze what is presented, from all sides, and attempt to create as whole a picture as you can.

2. Harry Potter, the Harry Potter books, and all copyright material relating to Harry Potter is the intellectual property of JK Rowling.
